ROOM SETUP

The great thing about this system is that you don’t need to have a professional setup to get a good quality recording! But, it helps to set up the room in a way to make sure you get the best quality recording:

* Find a place that is reasonably quiet. We have done recordings right next to busy highways and on construction sites and were still able to get good recordings, but if at all possible try and find a quiet space  to do your recording as outside noises can appear in recordings

* Try and make sure the room has furniture, mattresses, and other things around the space to reduce the echoes. We often put mattresses directly behind the translator and bible reading person

* Try and position the bible reader and the translator so that they are a good distance away (6 or so feet) and are able to see each other.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Check out some of these checklists for common issues that come up in Audacity. They are images, so you can right click and save the image to print it out and have next to you as you record if that is useful!

AUDACITY

Below is showing how to get audacity set up on your computer

STEP 1: Download the Audacity software onto your computer

STEP 2: Download the drivers for your Audio Interface

Typically you can go to the website of your audio interface, go to the download section, choose your product, and then download and install any software required. If you have a Scarlett Focusrite (The Red Interface), you can find that here

STEP 3: Download the Boris FX Hub software onto your computer

After downloading, installing, and creating an account, install “CrumplePop”… this software will automatically remove any “popping” sounds from “p’s” and “b’s” when you export your final audio. When installing, select the “Free, Watermarked” version (it’s not really watermarked and completely free!)

STEP 4: Download the zip file with our start up files

STEP 5: Import the Macros to Audacity

Go to: Tools – Macro Manager – Import

You’ll need to import each macro one by one (they are the txt files in the OMT Start Up Zip File)

STEP 6: Update the keyboard shortcuts

Go to: Preferences – Shortcuts (or Keyboard) – Import

Import the audacity-keys.xml file

STEP 7: Print off the Audacity Keyboard and stick it to the numbers on your keyboard

STEP 8: Start Recording!

1. Plug in your interface and then open up audacity (close and reopen if already opened just to make sure everything is set up right).

2. Create two new mono tracks (the first being the trade language and the second being the mother tongue translation). You can also download this default file here

3. Under “Audio Setup” make sure “Recording Device” is set to your interface, “Playback Device” is set to your computer speakers, and “Recording Channels” is set to Stereo. (If you don’t see your interface, try closing and reopening Audacity. Otherwise, you may need to reinstall your interface’s software.)

4. When listening back to your audio, you may need to check your computer settings to make sure the audio is coming out of your speaker, not the interface.

See below the video walkthrough video to start recording!
